Well look no further. Here’s a short list of  the most common tools used for modding.  Together with a simple description of  their applications and uses.

TOOLS:

Probably one of the most famous and most commonly used tool in case modding. The rotary tool or more commonly known as the DREMEL, is one of the most important tool to have in your workshop. Paired with the right bits and attachments. The rotary tool can cut, sand, drill, route, engrave, etch, polish, etc.

Useful in drilling screw holes and removing rivets, The power drill is an invaluable tool in any workshop.

One of my favorite tools in the shop. The jigsaw can be used to cut a wide variety of materials including thick acrylic sheets, aluminum and steel. With proper practice and the right type of blade. The jigsaw can cut effortlessly in any type of material with speed and precision.

The nibbler is useful when cutting small holes on the case. It can also be used in cutting small window panels.

• Pop Rivet Gun and Blind Rivets

When painting or modding any case. It’s usually much easier to dis-assemble or remove parts of the case for easier access. This is where the pop rivet gun and pop rivets come handy.

• Straight and Round Files.

Used in cleaning up and straightening rough cuts in any material.

• Combination Square and Ruler

Useful when marking or making layout designs on the side panel.

I was able to test out a new sprayer I bought for priming tonight… while priming. It’s a “Critter” and it works on the same venturi principle as the small airbrush that I have been using, except it’s bigger.

Instead of a little 2oz plastic cup (with all harbor freight plastic parts) it uses a mason jar. The tip and pick up tube are also both metal. It really makes the priming go faster, but it also has a lot more over-spray and leaves a little rougher finish to the primer. I’ll have to play with it more to try to get it dialed in.

With the parts all primed and ready to go, I should be able to start riveting tomorrow. I think this is going to be the first part where I will need someone to help me with the riveting. I believe that the skins are too big for one person to hold both the bucking bar and the rivet gun, so either Colleen or my dad will be getting a rivet gun training session!

 

Tomorrow is also the spring meeting of the Twin Cities RV Builders Group in St. Paul. I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of other builders. I’m also hoping to meet one of the EAA Tech Councilors that are in the club and see if I can’t get them to visit. An experienced set of eyes is always a good thing!

And again, I’m not capturing any of the priming in time-lapse. Just not a good way of doing it.

'The Human Torch versus The Sub-Mariner' (by Bill Everett and Carl Burgos): The Torch and Namor fight for twenty pages or so, and it ends with Namor having trapped the Torch in a transparent tube. This is a classic Marvel-style fight comic, something I have always been a fan of. The fight here is more than the two just trading blows for the whole story; they change environments and use their surroundings, and keep it varied enough so that it stays exciting. I can't wait to read the next chapter.

'The Angel' (by Paul Gustavson): The Angel is in a European village that is being menaced by vampires. He discovers that the vampires are really a gang of mad scientists, who are trying to transfer the minds of people with gorillas. This is a well-paced action/suspense story, with just the right amount of creepiness.

'The Masked Raider' (by Al Anders): The Masked Raider outwits some bandits who are stealing gold shipments. It's relatively well done for what it is. Perhaps I'm just in a good mood due to the Namor/Torch story?

'High Steel' (by John H. Compton): At face value, this is a story about a construction worker in South America who stops a payroll robbery by shooting the robber in the face with a rivet gun. But it has a contemplative, emotionally ambiguous ending that makes it feel a little deeper. Add in some genuine knowledge of construction work and an expansive vocabulary, and this feels light-years ahead of the usual crop of short stories.

'Electro, the Marvel of the Age' (by Steve Dahlman): Last issue, Professor Zog and Electro were kidnapped by alien dragon men and taken to their planet Ligra. Now they are forced by the dragon man leader Jago to help him overthrow the Lion Men. What results is a pretty rad battle, complete with ray guns and giant eagles. Eventually Zog manages to gain his freedom and turn Electro on the dragon men. The robot also has to rescue the queen from the creepiest giant octopus ever. I don't know what's going on with this comic; everything is great!

'Ferret, Mystery Detective' (by Stockbridge Winslow and Irwin Hasen): Ferret investigates the murder of a cleaning company owner, who was killed by a guy he didn't want to take on as a partner. There also some stuff with a thug called Hook (who has a hook for a hand, naturally), and I can't really figure out how it ties together. It's confusingly told in a number of places.

'Adventures of Ka-Zar the Great' (by Ben Thompson): Ka-Zar rescues a girl lost in the jungle and returns her to her father, pursued all the while by savage pygmies. It's adequate.

After many years of visiting the Van’s tent at Oshkosh and helping a friend pound together an RV-9A, I’ve decided it is now or never. An order for the RV-12 empennage and wing kits was placed earlier this week. What sealed the deal for me was a visit to Schmetterling Aviation one rainy Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago. Dave was gracious enough to stop working on his RV-12 and took the time to show me around his production facility. After viewing Dave’s build, hearing his comments about the project and having the opportunity to look over Van’s instructions and drawings, I decided a 12 was on the horizon just in time for Spring thaw. Before I ask my question, I want to express my gratitude to all the participants of this forum who have paved the way for those of us that are late starters. A big thanks to all of you who have discussed necessary tools, needed supplies, solutions for problems, along with helpful building tips. You have provided a wealth of knowledge for us new builders. Now on to tools…. After reading the forums, I know I will need/want a pneumatic puller to accompany the hand puller for the pop rivets. However, I also want to procure a pneumatic squeezer as well … I know it is not a necessary tool, but I want one none the less. The question, for those of you finished with your RV-12 or far enough along with your build to comment is … can all of the RV-12’s required squeezed rivets be done with a pneumatic squeezer with a 3” reach? I’m hoping to avoid purchasing a hand squeezer all together if possible. Thanks in advance for the advice. There just aren't that many solid rivets to squeeze. I would highly recommend a pneumatic "pop" rivet gun, though.
